The image of Santa is linked to …. no way!
With Christmas just around the corner, Santa Claus has been making his rounds in the shopping malls, on gift wrappers and perhaps even in your homes! However, did you know that the jolly Santa Claus image we know of today was popularized by a global leader in the beverage industry?
Coke popularized the image of Santa
If you guessed Coca Cola, then you’ve hit the nail right on the head! Contrary to popular belief, despite Santa’s distinct red and white coat often being associated with the brand colours of The Coca Cola Company, Coke did not actually create the signature red and white suit - it merely made fashionable the jolly and plump version of Santa as we know him today.
Santa, the jolly good fellow
Prior to Santa’s appearance in Coke advertisements, he was portrayed in different lights - from a scary elf to a tall haggard man! However, it was during the Depression years in 1931 where artist Haddon Sundblom was commissioned to draw Santa - and he did, therefore reintroducing Santa as a jovial, amiable rosy-cheeked man to spread the festive cheer.
