Last Tuesday, INNI had the distinct privilege of being featured in the launch of Tiger Beer Uncage–– which was about encouraging people to follow their own path, to have the courage to pursue passion, and to live life the way they want to. Their empowering message of breaking with convention and the boundaries that limit us sparked off some thoughts about how we think about beauty.
When we think beauty, glossy images of shiny hair, a tiny (toned, and preferably tanned) waist and definitely a face elaborately painted on with makeup surface almost as a kind of knee-jerk reaction– a result of the not-so-subtle images of women we have become so hugely accustomed to.
And this is still despite the increasing realisation that the standards of beauty we hold are unrealistic, punishing and unfair. Yet, the ability to move beyond these standards has been slowly gaining traction. In this regard, what we hope for ourselves and for the women around the world is neither new or different. Having the courage to hold to your own standards of beauty –– even if it means consciously breaking with the glossy-lipped, floral A-line skirts kind of beautiful –– will be a slow, but incremental process in overcoming the inertia anchored by years of adhering to conventional binarisms of beautiful/ugly, feminine/masculine, elegant/unseemly, thin/fat etc.
Here at INNI, we earnestly believe in continuing to help women visualise and realise these various senses of the word beautiful: there is a whole different world of beautiful that awaits us if we venture to see beyond the myopia of defining what is beautiful in our preconceived rigidity.
