For most, she needs no further introduction – she’s a young, self-styled
fashionista who runs Fashion Toast – a fashion blog where she writes thoughtful
pieces of writing alongside photographs of the various looks she pulls
together. As eclectic as the person she is –– she is of Japanese, Dutch and
Scottish descent –– her style curiously incorporates and expresses particularly
interesting and quirky juxtapositions. Think basic pieces in monochrome colours,
but cut with interesting geometrical lines, low-backs or delicate button
detailing. Her looks explore contrasting textures –– luxuriously textured
leather or furs meets basic fabrics. Her outfits, which hinge on notions of
contrast, are helmed by several well-placed accessories –– delicate jewellery,
boots with heavier grunge details, bags with clean lines and outwear with a
mind of its own.
Her foray into the fashion world was also a little unconventional – she wasn’t formally trained in design or fashion (she majored in Political Science, mind you), and didn’t boast of many fashion internships. However, equipped with a website, Instagram and a great personal brand, she articulates a style that is intensely refreshing and honest.
Since her beginnings, she has collaborated with well-known brands like
RVCA and Forever 21, even partnering with brands like REVOLVE Clothing and Shopbop.
She has also taken part in community-based modeling campaigns like Bulgari’s the
Save the Children Campaign and modelled for Rebecca Minkoff at the
Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. Her work has also been well credited –– she won
‘Best personal style blog’ and ‘blogger of the year’ award at the Bloglovin’
Awards. In December 2014, Rumi launched her very own luxury women’s apparel
line, ARE U AM I, a milestone achievement anchored by the simple belief that being
expressive and honest through style is the winning style indeed.
